Data Center Security: What's Lacking? Sridhar Pinnapureddy of CtrlS Datacenter Says Better Strategies Are Needed

Too many organizations lack an effective strategy for using the latest security technologies to protect their data centers, says Sridhar Pinnapureddy, founder and CEO at CtrlS Datacenter, Asia's largest Tier4 data center.

"A lot of technologies have been invented and a lot of tools have also come up. But what I see missing today is that strategy needs to be matured in terms of how to use these technologies to apply to information security," Pinnapureddy says in an interview with Information Security Media Group.

"One needs to do proper categorization, [determine] which data needs what kind of security, identify potential threats, and then the relevant solution needs to be applied."

Threats to data centers are changing, Pinnapureddy says. Earlier, the biggest issue was DDoS attacks; today, it's ransomware. "Ransomware is still a big nuisance, and it is probably 100 times more than what is getting reported," he says.

Pinnapureddy stresses the need to have proper drills for the security technologies that have been installed. "I see brilliant technologies invested in by large organizations, but the drill that is required, the discipline, the processes [needed] is where some maturity has to come up."

In this interview (see audio link below image), Pinnapureddy also discusses:

  • The importance of micro segmentation;
  • How the threats to data centers have changed over the years;
  • How the cloud is impacting data centers.

Pinnapureddy is founder of CtrlS Datacenters Ltd. He is credited with launching Asia's largest Tier-4 Datacenter and has orchestrated 200 innovations over the last decade.
