Kumar has focused on emerging areas such as generative artificial intelligence and cloud security over the past three years. Understanding these technologies and the potential risks associated with them is pivotal to creating modern cybersecurity strategies, Kumar said.

"If you want to be on top of things, it's very important that you put on your learning hat and start investing the time and effort to upskill," he said.

Kumar's journey has included numerous certifications and a Ph.D. in cybersecurity, with a focus on human factors in information security governance. But he said it's not the number of certifications that matter the most - it's the quality of the certifications and knowledge gained from them. Security leaders also need management perspectives along with technical skills, which will help them integrate security with the business and secure resources for security programs, he said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group as part of the CyberEdBoard's ongoing Profiles in Leadership series, Kumar also discussed:

  • Technology certifications vs. master's degrees;
  • Combining management skills with technical knowledge;
  • The value of organizations such as CyberEdBoard in bringing security leaders together.

Kumar has more than 20 years of experience in cybersecurity, data privacy, business continuity and corporate security domains. He is a CyberEdBoard member.
